CSAC: 8 athletes broke weight gain rules at Bellator 228, including five grand prix fighters

Eight fighters who competed at this past weekend’s Bellator 228 card in Inglewood, Calif. exceeded the 10 percent threshold for weight gained between Friday’s weigh-ins and Saturday’s event.

The fight night weights were provided to MMA Fighting by the California State Athletic Commission on Tuesday.

Included on the list of fighters who went over the 10 percent weight gain limit were five athletes who were competing in the ongoing Bellator Featherweight World Grand Prix.

Juan Archuleta exceeded the 10 percent weight gain limit set by the commission when he weighed in at 144.6 pounds on Friday and then set foot in the cage on Saturday at 164.8 pounds — a 14 percent weight gain. It was the second occurrence for Archuleta exceeding the commission’s weight gain threshold, but the previous incident took place when he was competing at bantamweight.

A.J. McKee, who scored a lightning-fast eight-second knockout in his fight, added 12 percent of his body weight between Friday and Saturday, going from 145 pounds to 161.8 pounds.

Daniel Weichel had the biggest weight gain of any of the competitors in the Bellator featherweight grand prix, as he went from 144.2 pounds to 165.5 pounds — a 15 percent gain — before earning a win over Saul Rogers.

The commission can recommend fighters move weight classes based on the amount of weight gained as well as require medical clearance before allowing an athlete to compete again in a given weight class when fighting in California.

Curbing extreme weight cuts has become a key issue for California State Athletic Commission executive director Andy Foster, who’s led the charge on preventing athletes from endangering themselves through the weight cutting process. The California commission is considering a rule that would allow fights to be cancelled if a fighter gains more than 15 percent of their body weight between the weigh-ins and fight night.
