Chris Gonzalez vs. Luis Vargas set for Bellator 226 in San Jose

Undefeated lightweight prospect Chris Gonzalez will make his return to the Bellator cage against Luis Vargas at Bellator 226 in San Jose.

Bellator officials confirmed the matchup to MMAFighting.

Gonzalez (2-0), Team Alpha Male’s latest wrestling standout, was last seen earning a decision win in his promotional debut against Charlie Radtke at Bellator 221 in June. Heading into the scrap Gonzalez, a former six-time Greco-Roman All-American, had declared himself “the best wrestler” in MMA.

Vargas (2-3) is looking to get back into the win column after suffering a second round submission to Kaleio Romero under the Combate Americas banner last May. This snapped his two fight win-streak, which included TKO wins over Justin McClain and Ronny Tsutsui.

Bellator 226 is currently slated to go down inside the SAP Center in San Jose on Sept. 7. With this latest addition, here is how the rest of the card stands:

  • Ryan Bader (c) vs. Cheick Kongo – for Bellator heavyweight championship
  • Sam Sicilia vs. Pedro Carvalho – Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix
  • Daniel Straus vs. Derek Campos – Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix
  • Pat Curran vs. Adam Borics – Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix
  • Emmanuel Sanchez vs. Tywan Claxton – Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix
  • Chris Gonzalez vs. Luis Vargas

(c) – Champion
