DC opens as sizable betting favorite over Brock Lesnar in matchup

Daniel Cormier is the betting favorite over Brock Lesnar.

The oddsmakers like Daniel Cormier’s chances when it comes to a potential blockbuster fight against Brock Lesnar.

Following his historic win over Stipe Miocic at UFC 226, Cormier was installed as more than a 2-to-1 favorite (-225) to successfully defend his heavyweight title against Lesnar (+175) in a potential future matchup, according to odds posted Monday by online bookmaker Bovada. Cormier defeated Miocic, the UFC’s record-breaking former heavyweight champion, via first-round knockout at UFC 226 to become only the second man in the promotion’s history to hold two belts simultaneously.

The 39-year-old two-time Olympian is currently the UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion. Cormier called out Lesnar for an in-cage confrontation on Saturday night following his win at UFC 226, leading to a pro wrestling-esque scene that quickly developing into a shoving match.

UFC president Dana White confirmed at UFC 226’s post-fight press conference that Lesnar will indeed be the next man to challenge for the heavyweight title. The matchup won’t be able to take place until at least Jan. 8, 2019 — the first day Lesnar will be cleared to compete after he officially re-enrolled into the USADA testing pool on Monday.

A WWE superstar, Lesnar (5-3, 1 NC) held the UFC heavyweight title from 2008-10 until losing it via first-round knockout to Cormier’s friend and teammate, Cain Velasquez. Lesnar made his return to MMA in 2016 with a dominant decision win over Mark Hunt at UFC 200, however that win was eventually overturned into a no contest as a result of Lesnar failing two pre-fight drug tests.

Cormier (21-1, 1 NC) is one of the greatest fighters of all-time and one of the best heavyweights to ever compete. His résumé includes victories across two weight classes over Miocic, Alexander Gustafsson, Josh Barnett, Frank Mir, Anderson Silva, Anthony Johnson (x2), Dan Henderson, and Antonio Silva.
