The UFC 207 fight week media schedule was sent out to press Friday night and there were conspicuous absences: the two headliners.
Ronda Rousey and Amanda Nunes will not be at the UFC Ultimate Media Day on Dec. 28. That function is the typically the only availability for press during the week and will not be open to the public. There will be no UFC 207 pre-fight press conference or open workouts.
Nunes will defend the UFC women’s bantamweight title against Rousey in the main event of UFC 207 on Dec. 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Rousey told ESPN The Magazine in a recent interview that she negotiated far fewer promotional appearances ahead of her bout with Nunes: “a few high-profile interviews with people of her choosing, a day of filming at the gym in Glendale and a staredown with Nunes at UFC 205, a bout that McGregor would headline in New York in November.”
Rousey, the biggest mainstream fighter in the UFC, has done “Ellen” and “Conan” in recent weeks and spoken to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne for that long piece. There’s a possibility should could be made available to certain outlets during fight week, but she will be at the traditional media day and neither will Nunes.
Nunes, 28, was in Los Angeles on Thursday for a media lunch and multiple on-air spots on Fox Sports 1 and other networks. Rousey has done a media day at her gym in Glendale, Calif., for her last three UFC fights, but there wasn’t one held this time.
Rousey, 29, lost the women’s bantamweight title to Holly Holm by second-round knockout at UFC 193 in November 2015. She has not fought since.
UFC president Dana White told FS1’s Colin Cowherd in October that Rousey’s biggest problem during her 13-month layoff was not her loss to Holm, but the media.
“She had issues,” White said. “Her biggest issues, in my opinion, were with the media. … She just felt like the media completely turned on her when she lost. She felt attacked. She felt like these people in the media, that she gave three years of her life, cruising around, giving interviews to, completely turned on her when she lost.”
