Q&A With RJD2
After several successful recordings that relied heavily on samples from records and other sources, indie hip-hop producer RJD2 found himself at a crossroads in his career. His cache of samples, amassed from years of collecting records, was severely depleted and he was faced with committing serious time to digging for more vinyl gems or venturing into new musical territory. He chose the latter. The result: His latest LP The Third Hand, which features live instruments and vocals (his own) on almost every track.
RJD2 returns to San Francisco on May 15 for a concert at Mezzanine. He spoke with SF Station during a phone interview from the road in Ohio, where he was raised.

Urban Warrior Police assurances on his gear are music to DJ’s ears
BRIAN LEWIS was leaving his apartment, heading to a gig as a disc jockey in January 2005, when three guys jumped him.
Two of them pulled pistols.
The men wanted his gear, including two CD mixers worth $499 each.
They also wanted Lewis to turn around and go back inside his house with them.
What the robbers didn’t know was that Lewis had a gun, and a permit to carry it.
Lewis reached for his gun, telling the robbers he was pulling out the key to his door.
Lewis aimed across his body, drawing a bead on the head of one man aiming a pistol at his back.
Click.
The gun was loaded, but there was no bullet in the chamber.

Execs sound a call to clean up hip-hop
Hip-hop leaders yesterday called on the music industry and broadcast outlets to voluntarily follow a new, tougher standard for language in the wake of the controversy about rappers’ use of lyrics demeaning to women that followed former talk show host Don Imus’ racist and sexist insults to the Rutgers women’s basketball team.
Under the new guidelines, announced by the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, the words “bitch” and “ho” would no longer be broadcast on radio or TV, and would also be removed from the “clean” versions of CDs, along with the N-word. A coalition on broadcast standards is also planned to create guidelines for visual content.

Nicole Richie’s Rivalry With DJ AM’s Ex
Is Nicole Richie still in love with DJ AM? It certainly seems that way after The Simple Life star got into a catfight via Blackberry with DJ AM’s recent ex, model Lauren Hastings. A source tells Star that Nicole is extremely jealous of the sexy Cry Me a River co-star.
On Monday night, April 16, Nicole was at a nightclub with Lindsay Lohan, who was text messaging Lauren when Nicole interceded, says the source. “Nicole just went off on Lauren by sending her text messages, saying Lauren was desperate and a fat bitch.”

Napster and Circuit City team up for music downloads
Circuit City Store Inc. and Napster Inc. have teamed up to offer a new digital music service cleverly called “Circuit City + Napster.” (I wonder how many marketing gurus it took to come up with that one.) The new service, which starts this coming Sunday, will give consumers unlimited downloads for $14.95 per month or 99 cents per download.
It’s hard to imagine what exactly Circuit City + Napster’s competitive advantage is here. With iTunes already deeply entrenched in the online downloading business, this looks like a pretty desperate attempt by Circuit City to become more relevant. I just don’t understand why someone would choose to go with the new service over Napster.
